Did you know that if you live until you’re 90, you will have slept for 32 years? We spend almost a third of our lives sleeping, and yet many of us don’t think about sleep until it goes wrong.
It is estimated that half of all people with cancer have sleep problems. Some studies have found even higher numbers of sleep disturbances depending on the type and stage.
While some sleep problems require specialist help, and others are to be expected in the circumstances, most can be improved by building better habits through the day so that you can sleep well at night.
The Sleep Better Series
Recognising the effect poor sleep has on people affected by cancer, Northern Cancer Alliance funded Live Well with Cancer to deliver a series of regional Sleep Masterclasses and capture the key content in an e-Learning resource that empowers people to improve their sleep.
The result is The Sleep Better Series, the first of many e-Learning resources we hope to create to empower anyone affected by cancer to improve their health and wellbeing.
Developed by our partners at Transformational Learning, the series covers what sleep is, why it is important, and how you can improve your sleep, and includes modules on cancer and how professionals can help their patients.
You can try the series now at www.livewellwithcancer.co.uk/the-sleep-better-series.
Special thanks go to Professor Jason Ellis, whose expertise was invaluable in the development of our e-Learning resource.
Sleep and Wellbeing
While our e-Learning resource can help anyone to get a better night’s sleep, we continue to deliver workshops for patients and professionals in North Tyneside and the surrounding areas.
Generously funded by Morrisons Foundation, our Sleep and Wellbeing project provides practical advice on how to improve sleep, highlighting the importance of what we do during the day.
“If you live well, you sleep better. If you sleep well, you live better.”
Using the lessons learned when developing The Wellbeing 9-a-Day, we have created The Sleep Better Journal, a tool that puts the power in users’ hands as they build habits that help them get a good night’s sleep.
The two journals are aimed at people of all ages, providing frameworks that they can personalise to their own wants and needs. Whether they are used independently or in combination, they can help people create holistic and lasting change, one day at a time.
Help us trial The Sleep Better Journal
With the first batch of journals on their way to us, we are looking for volunteers to trial our latest wellness resource and help us create a journal that can help anyone to sleep better.
As part of our Sleep and Wellbeing project with Morrisons Foundation, we will be hosting an introduction session to The Sleep Better Journal from 6-7.30pm on 13th November at the Live Well with Cancer Wellbeing Centre.
If you would like to volunteer for our trial, please email info@livewellwithcancer.co.uk to register your interest. Spaces for the session are limited and priority will be given to those affected by cancer, including family, friends, carers and healthcare professionals.
